CLEMENT CLARKE MOORE #FamilyTreeTuesday

Clement Clarke Moore (July 15, 1779 – July 10, 1863) was an American Professor of Oriental and Greek Literature, as well as Divinity and Biblical Learning, at the General Theological Seminary of the Protestant Episcopal Church, in New York City. Located on land donated by the "Bard of Chelsea" himself, the seminary still stands today on Ninth Avenue between 20th and 21st Streets, in an area known as Chelsea Square. Moore's connection with that institution continued for over twenty-five years. He is the author of the yuletide poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas", which later became famous as "'Twas the Night Before Christmas".

Life and career

Moore was born on July 15, 1779, to Bishop Benjamin Moore – who headed the Episcopal Diocese of New York, and was twice the president of Columbia College – and Charity Clarke, whose father, Major Thomas Clarke, owned the Manhattan estate "Chelsea" where Moore was born. This estate would later pass to Charity Clarke and then to Moore, but he grew up in the Moore family residence in Elmhurst, Queens. He was a graduate of Columbia College (1798), where he earned both his B.A. and his M.A..
One of Moore's earliest known works was an anonymous pro-Federalist pamphlet published prior to the 1804 presidential election, attacking the religious views of Thomas Jefferson (the incumbent president and Democratic-Republican candidate). His polemic, titled in full Observations upon Certain Passages in Mr. Jefferson's Notes on Virginia, which Appear to Have a Tendency to Subvert Religion, and Establish a False Philosophy, focused on Jefferson's Notes on the State of Virginia (1785), which Moore concluded was an "instrument of infidelity".
In 1820, Moore helped Trinity Church organize a new parish church, St. Lukes in the Fields, on Hudson Street,[5] He later gave 66 tracts of land – his apple orchard – to the Episcopal Diocese of New York to be the site of the General Theological Seminary. Moore had written a Hebrew lexicon, and was made professor of Biblical learning at the Seminary, a post that he held until 1850.
Despite his objections to the Commissioner's Plan of 1811, which ran the new Ninth Avenue through the middle of his estate, Moore began the development of Chelsea with the help of James N. Wells, dividing it up into lots along Ninth Avenue and selling them to well-heeled New Yorkers. Covenants in the deeds of sale specified what could be built on the land – stables, manufacturing and commercial uses were forbidden – as well as architectural details of the buildings.
From 1840 to 1850, he was a board member of the New York Institution for the Blind at 34th Street and Ninth Avenue, which is now the New York Institute for Special Education. He compiled a Hebrew and English Lexicon (1809), and published a collection of poems (1844). Upon his death in 1863 at his summer residence in Newport, Rhode Island, his funeral was held in Trinity Church, Newport, where he had owned a pew. Then his body was interred in the cemetery at St. Luke in the Fields. On November 29, 1899, his body was reinterred in Trinity Church Cemetery in New York.

EUNICE GUILLIAMS #MemorialMonday






GUILLIAMS, Eunice Lorraine, 69, of Callaway, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday evening, December 14, 1995, after a lengthy and courageous battle with many complications. As she was being summoned to come home, she was surrounded by numerous loved ones and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ezekial and Ruth Nichols; an infant daughter, Anna Lee Richards; and two brothers, Alton and Billy Nichols.
She was the pillar of strength, guidance and support of her husband of forty years and to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her great joy and a twinkle to her eye. To her, worldly possessions meant little. Her greatest possessions were times spent with her family, both in adversity as well as joy.
She leaves many survivors and devoted friends as she goes to spend eternity with her Lord. Surviving are her husband, Herman L. Guilliams; sons and daughters-in-law, Norman E. and Donna Jackson Richards, Vinton, James Richards, San Francisco, Calif., Roger and Marie Richards, Bassett, Donnie Richards, Martinsville and Jimmy Lee Guilliams, Callaway; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Gallew, Sanford, N.C., Sandra and Mike Donovant, Spencer, Debbie and Kenny Meador, Wirtz, Donna and Jeff Adkins, Chatham, Lisa and Ivy Jay Layman, III, Ferrum and Delores and Mike Agee, Rocky Mount; 21 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Gordon Nichols, New Orleans, La., Burton Nichols, Roanoke and Robert Nichols, Troutville; sisters, Tressie Sigmon, Salem, Flossie Moran, Norfolk, Annie Moran and Shirley Mauk, both of Copper Hill; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Piedmont Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Richard Slider officiating. Interment will follow in the Callaway Community Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Callaway Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 44, Callaway, Va. 24067 or to one's choice. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Saturday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Jay Layman, Ferrum. "Jesus of Nazareth (c. 5 BC/BCE – c. 30 AD/CE),[3] also known as Jesus Christ or simply Jesus, is the central figure of Christianity, which views him as the Messiah foretold in the Old Testament, with most Christian denominations believing him to be the Son of God and God incarnate who was raised from the dead.[6] Islam considers Jesus a prophet and also the Messiah.[7] Several other religions revere him in some way. He is one of the most influential figures in human history.
The principal sources of information regarding Jesus' life and teachings are the four canonical gospels, especially the Synoptic Gospels,[8][9] though some scholars argue such texts as the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of the Hebrews [10][11] are also relevant.[12]
Most critical scholars in biblical studies believe that some parts of the New Testament are useful for reconstructing Jesus' life,[13][14][15][16] agreeing that Jesus was a Jew who was regarded as a teacher and healer, that he was baptized by John the Baptist, and was crucified in Jerusalem on the orders of the Roman Prefect of Judaea, Pontius Pilate, on the charge of sedition against the Roman Empire.[17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] Aside from these few conclusions, academic debate continues regarding the chronology, the central message of Jesus' preaching, his social class, cultural environment, and religious orientation.[12] Critical scholars have offered competing descriptions of Jesus as a self-described Messiah, as the leader of an apocalyptic movement, as an itinerant sage, as a charismatic healer, and as the founder of an independent religious movement. Most contemporary scholars of the historical Jesus consider him to have been an independent, charismatic founder of a Jewish restoration movement, anticipating an imminent apocalypse.[29] Other prominent scholars, however, contend that Jesus' "Kingdom of God" meant radical personal and social transformation instead of a future apocalypse.[29]
Christians predominantly believe that Jesus is the "Son of God" (generally meaning that he is God the Son, the second person in the Trinity) who came to provide salvation and reconciliation with God by his death for their sins.[30]:568-603 Christians traditionally believe that Jesus was born of a virgin,[30]:529-532 performed miracles,[30]:358-359 founded the Church, rose from the dead, and ascended into Heaven,[30]:616-620 from which he will return.[30]:1091-1109 While the doctrine of the Trinity is accepted by most Christians, a few groups reject the doctrine of the Trinity, wholly or partly, as non-scriptural.[31] Most Christian scholars today present Jesus as the awaited Messiah[32] and as God.
In Islam, Jesus (Arabic: عيسى‎, commonly transliterated as Isa) is considered one of God's important prophets,[33][34] a bringer of scripture, and a worker of miracles. Jesus is also called "Messiah", but Islam does not teach that he was divine. Islam teaches that Jesus ascended bodily to heaven without experiencing the crucifixion and resurrection,[35] rather than the traditional Christian belief of the death and resurrection of Jesus."

Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra #FamilyTreeTuesday

This week Christians all over the world will be celebrating Christmas,  the holiday commemorating the birth of Jesus. However, most children will simply be anticipating the arrival of Santa Claus. Did you know that Santa Claus, or Saint Nick, is based a a real person?
St. Nicholas was born in Lycia, Asia Minor, and died as Bishop of Myra in 352. He performed many miracles and exercised a special power over flames. When he heard that a father who had fallen into poverty was about to expose his three daughters to a life of sin, Nicholas took a bag of gold and secretly flung it through the window into the room of the sleeping father. In this way, the three girls were dowered and saved from mortal sin and hell.
The story of Saint Nicholas came to America in distorted fashion. The Dutch Protestants carried a popularized version of the saint’s life to New Amsterdam, portraying Nicholas as nothing more than a Nordic magician and wonder-worker. Our present-day conception of Santa Claus has grown from this version. Catholics should think of Nicholas as a saint, a confessor of the faith and the bishop of Myra — not merely as a jolly man from the North Pole who brings happiness to small children. Many countries and locations honor St. Nicholas as patron: Greece, Russia, the Kingdom of Naples, Sicily, Lorraine, and many cities in Italy, Germany, Austria, and Belgium.

Family History 101 #FamilyHistoryFriday

So family history is your new interest and you don't know where to begin; might I suggest hugging a tree. A family tree that is. When I started my first tree I talked to Ma and Pa and found out everything they knew about their Mas and Pas and their Mas and Pas and so forth and things started to come together pretty quick after that, plus there were a lot of other family history researchers in the family that had info on my tree and knowledge is power.

1. INTERVIEWS. The first thing you need to build a family tree is roots. Talk to people who know people. Take notes, literally. I have notebooks full of them. 

2. TREES. making your first tree in your notebooks is a start, but eventually you may heed something bigger and more organized. I bought the Family Tree for Dummies package which came with software that is very useful and user friendly. Also, you can get software online at MyHeritage and Ancestry. Oh, yeah and always download the GEDCOM for backup when you are done. You can get a free tree builder at http://www.myheritage.com/family-tree-builder to work on offline or you can make a tree online at Ancestry or Geni or WikiTree of FamilySearch. I recommend using them all. GEDCOMs can be made and downloaded at MyHeritage and Ancestry and Geni and WikiTree too. It doesnt hurt to have more than one...

3. Save your sources and document them. Print them too if you can. Hard copies are always great for scrapbooks...   

4. Research. Family history sites like Ancestry and Family Search and My Heritage and Geni can help you find answers to the unanswered questions that pop up from time to time, and it does not hurt to have other researchers working on your lines to consult with. Look for genealogy groups at all your favorite social networks too.  

5. Take notes and lots of them. Those notebooks will come in handy later.
