Now featuring FAMILY TREE TV!!!

New playlist added from YouTube. Updates to follow so check back often.

Family History Album at Pinterest!

I tend to forget to blog about new features and finds in my blog, like per example, my family history album at Pinterest. You can find it on the sidebar or in the Pages widget above.

Keep your files backed up and hard copied!

Co- op trees are very useful for finding answers to your family questions as others who are researching the same branch can offer leads but beware of relying too much on these sites, they are known to be full of errors and can be difficult if not impossible to correct. Keep your info backed up in your own tree that you have full control of offline and at personal tree sites like Ancestry. Co-op sites allow strangers to rip your tree apart and undo all your hard work. Personal trees should always come first.

    THE DUNCAN TARTAN #FamilyHistoryFriday

The Duncan Tartan most likely used by my Duncan cousins.

    *From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia...

    Clan Duncan
    Dunchad / Donchadh / Donnachadh
    Duncan-crest-badge.jpg
Crest: On waves of the sea a demasted ship.
MottoDisce Pati (Learn to Endure) ca. 1672
    Profile
    RegionPerthshire, Tayside, Angus, Fife, Aberdeenshire.
Clan Duncan has no chief, and is an armigerous clan
The personal name Duncan can be found in Scotland’s oldest records in its Gaelic form Dunchad/Donchadh/Donachie/Donnchadh and other spelling variants.

(Dunchad) Duncan, originally a forename[1] is without doubt one of the earliest names in Scotland – surnames being introduced by theNormans around 1120 AD – and originates from the Dalriadan CelticCeltic Scotii (Scots) from Ireland who colonised the south west of Scotland from about the 4th century AD. Dúnchad (Duncan mac Conaing) co-ruled Dalriada with Conall II (c.650 - 654).[2]
Other early accounts of the name include the 9 ft inscribed ‘Turpillian Stone’ of the 4th century AD at Crickhowell, Wales, a particularly early mention of the name Duncan. Inscribed in Ogham (an early form of Celtic writing) the stone also carried the Latin translation “TURPILLI IC IACIT PUUERI TRILUNI DUNOCATI” which roughly translates as The Fort Warrior.[3] Mention is also made of Dunchad (Duncan) the 11th Abbot of Iona, 707 – 717AD (later St. Dunchadh) and Dunchad (Duncan) the 39th Abbot in 989AD.[4][5]
Records from this time are scant and it is not until after the unification by Kenneth MacAlpin around 843 AD of theCeltic Scots of Dál Riata (Dalriada) and the aboriginal Picts of northern Britain do we start to see the name significantly being used in other parts of Scotland. One of the earliest references to Dunchad/Donchad, is found in the margins of the 11th century 'Book of Deer the oldest writings in Scots Gaelic known in Scotland today, These manuscript were written by the early Christian Monks of the Abbey of Deer in Aberdeenshire.[6]
When Duncan I took the Scottish throne, Unlike the "King Duncan" of Shakespeare's Macbeth, the historical Duncan appears to have been a young man. He followed his grandfather Malcolm II as king after the latter's death on 25 Nov. 1034, without apparent opposition. He may have been Malcolm's acknowledged successor or tánaise as the succession appears to have been uneventful. Duncan would have been wise to pacify his remaining family, especially his senior cousin Thorfinn the Mighty, Earl of Orkney; his uncle, MacBeth; and the person closest to his throne, Queen Gruoch, MacBeth’s wife. By 1040, however, Duncan had been murdered and the crown was in the hands MacBeth.

Sir John Savage V, Knight of the Bath #FamilyTreeTuesday

Sir John Savage V is my 16th great uncle.

    Birth: 1450
    Cheshire, England
    Death: Oct. 18, 1492
    Boulogne-Billancourt
    Departement des Hauts-de-Seine
    Ile-de-France, France

John Savage a politician and soldier, was the son of Sir John Savage of Clifton, by Katherine, daughter of Thomas, Lord Stanley, and sister of Thomas Stanley, first earl of Derby. Thomas Savage (d. 1507), archbishop of York, was his brother.
John Savage, junior, as he was usually styled, was created a knight of the Bath by Edward IV on the occasion of his queen's coronation on 26 May 1465.
On April 17, 1483, as a knight of the royal body, he was one of those selected to bear Edward's body into Westminster Abbey.
Savage was mayor of Chester in 1484 and 1485, and in the former year was made a freeman of the city, with eight of his brothers.
Richard III bestowed much preferment upon him, delegating him to take the oaths of allegiance in Kent, and placing him in the commission of the peace. Nevertheless he had a secret understanding with the Earl of Richmond. His treachery came to light through the arrest of Lord Stanley's son, Lord Strange, and Savage joined Richmond on his march through Wales. At the battle of Bosworth he is said to have commanded the left wing of Henry's army. For his services Henry VII granted him a number of forfeited estates in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and Shropshire, on 7 March 1486.
On February 16, 1488 he received fresh grants, and on November 16, was elected a knight of the Garter. He took part in the siege of Boulogne in October 1492, and, being intercepted by the enemy while reconnoitring, refused to surrender, and was in consequence slain.
By his wife Dorothy, daughter of Sir Ralph Vernon of Haddon, he had a son, John, who succeeded him, and four daughters. Sir John had also an illegitimate son George, rector of Davenham, Cheshire, who is said to have been the father of Edmund Bonner, bishop of London.
