Katherine Hancock Walker #MemorialMonday

Katherine Lee Fields Hancock Walker, age 78, formerly of Henry County, passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center, Stuart. She was born in Galax on April 10, 1936 to the late James Floyd and Mary Elizabeth Ayers Fields. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Hancock, a brother, William Roby Fields and a sister, Nettie Virginia Phillips.

She had worked for American Furniture Red Level Plant and the Bassett Superior Lines before retiring. She had attended the County Line Church of God of Prophecy.

She is survived by her ex-husband, William Walker of Bassett, her sons, Dennis Gene Hancock, Charles L. Hancock, and James Leslie Hancock all of Bassett, sisters, Frances Thompson and Vergie Graham both of Martinsville a grandson, Dennis D. Hancock and a great-grandchild, Ashton S. Hancock.

Her funeral service will be held on Monday, February 02, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Roselawn Funeral Home with Pastors Freddie Bonds and Josie Foley officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 01, 2015 from 6-8:00 p.m. in the chapel of Roselawn.

HETTIE NICHOLS HALE DUNFORD #MemorialMonday

Hettie Nichols Hale Dunford, 90, formerly of Floyd passed away Monday, October 16, 2006 in a Bedford Nursing Home.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Harmon Hale and William W. Dunford; two sisters, Hazel Woods and Ruby Hancock; and a brother, Maynard Nichols.

She is survived by two brothers and wives, Wilburn and Hazel Nichols of Roanoke, Howard and Lourrain Nichols of Lexington, N.C.; two sisters, Peggy and A.B. Hoback of Salem, Elsie Isom of Winston Salem, N.C.; two sisters-in-law, Sadie Nichols of Salem and Hazel Hale Peters of Roanoke.

Funeral service will be Thursday, October 19, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Wood Funeral Home in Floyd with the Rev. Elbert Lee Naff, officiating with interment in the Hale Family Cemetery in Floyd. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home in Floyd.

LENA MAE NICHOLS O'NEAL #MEMORIALMonday

Lena Mae Nichols O’Neal, 96, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at Millcroft Senior Living, Newark, DE. Previously, she lived for 49 years in Hack’s Point, Maryland.Born on May 11, 1916 in Darlington, MD, she was the daughter of the late E. B. and Lula (Collins) Nichols.

Mrs. O’Neal moved to Bent Mountain, VA near Roanoke following the death of her mother in 1922 to be raised by her father and his family. She returned to Cecil County, MD in her teens and worked in the Wilmington area as a nanny. For the rest of her life she kept in close contact with her Virginia relatives.

Mrs. O’Neal worked for many years at the J.J. Newberry Department store on Main Street in Elkton in various departments. She retired at the age of 65 as the luncheonette manager, at this time the store was known as McCrory’s.

Lena was a kind and gentle person, good cook, avid reader, and amateur historian. She loved to garden, visit with family and take annual vacations to Ocean City, MD and Williamsburg, VA.

In addition to her parents, Lena was preceded in death by her husband Clifton J. O’Neal Sr. who died in 1987, daughter Theresa Alma O’Neal Turner, grandson Robert “Ted” Turner, and granddaughter Gina Lee O’Neal Raimond as well as her two brothers, Irven and Nelson.

She leaves behind a legacy to be enjoyed by her family for many years to come. Mrs. O’Neal is survived by her daughter Fairfax O’Neal Bauernschmidt of Newark, DE and her husband Robert and their three sons, Glenn, Alan and Paul. She is also survived by her son Clifton J. “Buddy” O’Neal Jr. of Middletown, DE and his wife Carol and their daughter Collette. Lena is survived by Marvin Wilson whom she raised in her home, and his wife Jane of Knoxville, TN. She is also survived by grandsons Jeffery Turner and Rennie Turner, 18 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

A viewing for family and friends will be held from 9:30-11:00 am on Saturday, September 15 at Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad Street in Middletown Funeral services will be held at 11 am with interment immediately following at Galena Cemetery, Galena, MD.

The family would like to thank the kind staff of Millcroft Senior Living for the love they showed Lena.

PEGGY NICHOLS HOBACK #MemorialMonday

Clarissa Nichols (Peggy) Hoback, 88, of Salem, Va., passed away Friday, October 30, 2009. She was born January 20, 1921, in Floyd County, Va., daughter of the late Rufus and Mamie Collins Nichols.

 She was also preceded in death by a brother, Maynard Nichols; and four sisters, Hettie Dunford, Irene Hancock, Hazel Woods and Elsie Isom.

Mrs. Hoback was a member of Central United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Builders Class and taught preschoolers Sunday school for over 35 years.

She is survived by her loving husband, A.B. Hoback; daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Rodney Overstreet; grandchildren, Matthew and Katie Overstreet; brothers, Wilburn Nichols and wife, Hazel, and Howard Nichols and wife, Lorraine; sisters-in-law, Sadie Nichols and Lavene Nichols; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, November 2, 2009, at the chapel of John M. Oakey and Son, Salem with the Rev. David Mucha officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, November 1, 2009, at John M. Oakey and Son.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Hoback's name to Salem Rescue Squad or to the Central United Methodist Church Building Fund. 540-389-5441.

Valentine Nichols #MemorialMonday

Born and died in 1927 on February 14, my uncle now lies buried in a grave next to his loving mother, May Collins Nichols in Jacksonville Cemetery, Floyd, Virginia. At the time of death he was unnamed but the family refer to him as Valentine.

Originally buried on his grandfather's farm, he was later moved to his final resting place along with his mother and father after his father died.

Rest in Peace little Valentine.

HAZEL NICHOLS WOODS #MemorialMonday

WOODS, Hazel Nichols, 75, of Roanoke and formerly of Bent Mountain, passed away Monday, October 16, 2000 in Roanoke. She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin Thomas "Taz" Woods. 

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Betty Mae Woods-Myers and Harry Carl (H.C.) Myers of Roanoke, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Lee (Bobby), Sr. and Linda Gale Woods of Copper Hill, Va.; four grandchildren, Stacy Woods of Roanoke, Va., Robert (Robbie) Woods, Jr., Connie Woods, Cathy Woods, all of Copper Hill, Va.; one great-grandchild, Lacy Woods of Copper Hill, Va.; four sisters and one brother-in-law, Hettie N. Dunford of Montvale, Va., Ruby Irene N. Hancock of Stuart, Va., Peggy N. and A. B. Hoback of Salem, Va., Elsie N. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Restvale Cemetery. Friends may call after 7 p.m. Wednesday at Gardner Funeral Home where the family will be Wednesday and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. both evenings.

FRANK M. AKERS #MemorialMonday


Frank McKinley Akers, 79, of Walnut Grove Road, Lexington passed away Thursday, February 7, 2008 at Brian Center of Lexington.

A graveside service will be 2 pm Sunday, at Forest Hill Memorial Park by Preacher Clyde Akers.

Mr. Akers was born May 22, 1928, in Grayson County, Va., to Will Akers and Vennie Lee Bourne Akers. He was a retired self employed truck driver. Mr. Akers was preceded in death by his wife, Evangeline Kirby Akers.

Surviving are his sons, Dallas, Terry, Donald, Jerry, Eddie and Gary Akers, all of Lexington; his daughter, Brenda Ballew of Lexington; one brother, Hobart Akers of Fries, Va.; and a sister, Edna Leath of Lexington; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 12 p.m. until 1:45 pm Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home and at other times at the home on Walnut Grove Road.

Maynard Ezekiel Nichols #MemorialMonday

Maynard Ezekiel Nichols, 82, of Salem, died on Monday, December 12, 2005. He was born in Copper Hill, Va., on March 1, 1923. 

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sadie Nichols. He is also survived by his daughter, Linda and her husband Lynn Lucas; his grandson, Daryl Lucas and his wife Patty; his granddaughter, Debbie Sandridge and her husband Randy; and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers, Wilburn and his wife Hazel, Howard and his wife Lorane; sisters, Hettie Dunford, Clarcie and her husband A.B. Hoback, Elsie Isom. 

He was predeceased by his sisters, Hazel Wood and Irene Hancock. 

He ran Nichols Market for many years. He was an active member and Deacon in the Church of God. 

Funeral services will be conducted at Lotz Salem Chapel on Wednesday, December 14, 11 a.m. with Pastor Harvey Anders and Pastor Charles Russell with interment in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lotz Funeral Home, Salem. 1

  • HERMAN LEE GUILLIAMS, 83, of Callaway, passed away Saturday, April 20, 2002. He was a dedicated and faithful husband, daddy and grandpa. He was born and lived his entire life in Callaway (Franklin Co.). He served his country in the U.S.Air Force during World War II. 
  • He was preceded in death of his wife, Eunice N. Guilliams; his parents, Jack Guilliams and Girlie G. Wright; and a stepdaughter, Linda Gallew. 
  • He is surived by his children and spouses, Jimmy Guilliams of Callaway, Debbie and Kenny Meador of Wirtz, Donna Atkins of Callaway, Lisa and Jay Layman, Dee and Mike Agee of Ferrum; his stepchildren, Norman, James Roger and Donnie Richards, Sandy Donovant. Also surviving are his cherished grandchildren, Adam, Josh and Lacy Meador, Jennifer Atkins, Jay and Chelsea Layman and Crystal Agee; ten stepgrandchildren, two half brothers, Wiley Wright, Jr. and Tracy Wright; one half sister, Doris May Lawrence all of Roanoke; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, George and Flossie Moran, John and Teenie Moran, Bill and Tressie Sigmon, Shirley and John Mauk, Robert and Doris Nichols, Gordon and Burton Nichols; a special aunt, Nannie Guilliams and many nieces and nephews.

    Gordon Ezekiel Nichols #MemorialMonday

    Gordon Ezekiel Nichols, 79, passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at Belle Maison Nursing Home in Hammond, La. He was born February 21, 1935 in Floyd County.

    Surviving are his wife, Vera Annie Gordon Nichols; daughters, Susan (Bruce) Angell, Patricia (Scott) Angle, Candis (Curtis) Dennis, Nichole (Larry) Montecino, and Stormie (David) Bourgeois; son, Earl Brent McCarroll; 11 grandchildren, Liney, Lawson, Judah, Alex, Zack, Callie, Kayla, Brandee, Natalie, Lacy, Clint, Harley, Jamie, and Breann; 7 great-grandchildren; brother, Burton Nichols; sisters, Flossie Moran, Tressie Sigmon, and Shirley Mauk. 

    He is preceded in death by his parents, Ezekiel Chris and Ruth Jane Conner Nichols; brothers, Robert, Billy, and Alton Nichols; sisters, Eunice Guilliams and Annie Moran.

    EUNICE GUILLIAMS #MemorialMonday






    GUILLIAMS, Eunice Lorraine, 69, of Callaway, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday evening, December 14, 1995, after a lengthy and courageous battle with many complications. As she was being summoned to come home, she was surrounded by numerous loved ones and friends.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, Ezekial and Ruth Nichols; an infant daughter, Anna Lee Richards; and two brothers, Alton and Billy Nichols.
    She was the pillar of strength, guidance and support of her husband of forty years and to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her great joy and a twinkle to her eye. To her, worldly possessions meant little. Her greatest possessions were times spent with her family, both in adversity as well as joy.
    She leaves many survivors and devoted friends as she goes to spend eternity with her Lord. Surviving are her husband, Herman L. Guilliams; sons and daughters-in-law, Norman E. and Donna Jackson Richards, Vinton, James Richards, San Francisco, Calif., Roger and Marie Richards, Bassett, Donnie Richards, Martinsville and Jimmy Lee Guilliams, Callaway; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Gallew, Sanford, N.C., Sandra and Mike Donovant, Spencer, Debbie and Kenny Meador, Wirtz, Donna and Jeff Adkins, Chatham, Lisa and Ivy Jay Layman, III, Ferrum and Delores and Mike Agee, Rocky Mount; 21 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Gordon Nichols, New Orleans, La., Burton Nichols, Roanoke and Robert Nichols, Troutville; sisters, Tressie Sigmon, Salem, Flossie Moran, Norfolk, Annie Moran and Shirley Mauk, both of Copper Hill; several nieces and nephews also survive.

    He was born to the late Burrell and Ida Linville Hancock, February 2, 1924.
    Lonnie is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mildred Colleen Hancock; daughters and son-in-law, Jerry and Brenda H. Akers, Angie H. Cole; son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Dreama Hancock; grandsons and wives, Jerry and Carrie Akers, Joey Akers, Stevie Akers, Timmy and Yvonne Cole; granddaughters, Christy Cole, and Sara Hancock; great-grandchildren, Breanna, Bridgett, Evan, Katey, and Sophia Akers, Nathan and Beth Cole, Anna Linkous, Bayleigh Cole, Alyvia Cole; many nieces and nephews.

    Beulah Radford Nichols #MemorialMonday



    Our family prayer warrior, Beulah Nichols of Moneta went to her heavenly home on Monday, December 1, 2014. God’s Angels met her at her beloved Strawberry Banks. Her warm and loving ways endeared her to everyone. She was born in Silver Leaf, VA on August 15, 1912 to Arristeen and Robert Radford. She is survived by three children, Margaret N. Harman, Joyce N. Griffith (James) and Gary L. Nichols (Susan); 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2 p.m. Wednesday with Pastor Melvin Harris and Rev. Robert Miller officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. Her family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.

    Davie Davis 1912-1999 #MemorialMonday

    KING -- Mr. Davie ''Pop'' Davis, 87, of 286 Main Street, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at Village Care of King. Mr. Davis was born on April 12, 1912 in Carroll County, Virginia to John and Martha Smith Davis. 
    Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his wife, Gracie Mae Hancock Davis, his parents, a brother and four sisters. He was a retired logger and a member of East Side Baptist Church in Mooresville. 

    Surviving are three daughters, Rose (Roger) Eaton of Tobaccoville, Mary (Junior) Griffin of Mooresville, and Jane (Manuel) Puckett of Pine Ridge, N.C.; seven sons, Howard (Margaret) Davis of Mt. Airy, Junior Davis of King, Roger Davis and Danny Davis, both of Tobaccoville, Frank (Judy) Davis of Mt. Airy, Roy Davis of Sauratown Mountain, and Billy Davis of King; 20 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. 
    Graveside services will be conducted Friday, April 23, 1999, at 11:00 a.m. at the East Bend Friends Cemetery by Rev. Jack Causey. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend.

    Kyle Hancock 1930-2011

    Kyle Hancock, 80, of Galax, died Tuesday, July 5, 2011, in the VA Medical Center in Salem.
    He was born in Cripple Creek on Aug. 6, 1930, to Burrell and Ida Mae Linville Hancock.
    Survivors include his wife, Lena Robinson Hancock of Galax; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Clifford Mullins of Woodlawn; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Pam Hancock of Galax; four grandchildren and spouses; a great-granddaughter; brother and sister-in-law, Lonnie and Colleen Hancock of Pulaski; and several nieces and nephews.
    A funeral will be held Saturday, July 9, 2011, at 11 a.m. in the Galax Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. Titus Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Monta Vista Cemetery with military rites by Hillsville VFW Post 1115. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church.

    Garnett Hancock 1919-1994

    FRIES, VA. - Garnett Edgar Hancock, 74, of Fries, died Saturday, Nov. 19, 1994, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.                          
                                                   
    The funeral will be at 2 pm today at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home in Galax, Va., by the Rev. Albert Linville and David Fitzgerald. Burial will be in Fries Cemetery.                    

    Mr. Hancock was born Sept. 30, 1919, in Galax, Va., to Burrell Hancock and Ida Linville Hancock. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Doris Marie Hancock and Linda Kate Grubb.          

    Surviving are his wife, Eula Akers Hancock, of the home; six daughters, Belva Jean Hancock of the home, Delsa Marlow of Galax,Va., Lorene Nichols, Mary Mitchell, Stella Pierce and Ruth Matilda Hancock Heninger, all of Lexington; four sons, Harold Hancock, Freddy Hancock, Jimmie Hancock and Bobby Hancock, all of Lexington; five brothers, Kenny Hancock and Elmer Hancock, both of Fries, Lonnie Hancock of Pulaski, Va., and Kyle Hancock and Carlile Hancock, both of Galax; 22 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

    Ollie Mae Wimmer Nichols 1912-2005



  • Ollie Mae Wimmer Nichols, 93, formerly of Copper Hill, Va., departed this earth for her Heavenly home on Wednesday, June 29, 2005. She was a long-time member of the Copper Hill Church of the Brethren. She retired from Kenrose Manufacturing Company after 25 years of service. Ollie Mae was born on May 1, 1912 to Thomas and Hattie Wimmer of Copper Hill, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard "Rich" Ira Nichols. They will once again celebrate their wedding anniversary together in heaven on July 1st. She was also proceed in death by her sons, James Thomas Nichols, Carl Edwards Nichols and Marshall Everette Nichols; her grandsons, Thomas Wayne Smith and James Martin, Jr; and infant great-granddaughter, Kelsea Jade Nichols; brothers, Wendall Wimmer, Dennis Wimmer and "Dink" Wimmer; and a sister, Mary Hundley. Surviving to cherish her memory are her sons, Wesley (Marian) Nichols, Johnny Nichols, Fred (Patricia) Nichols, and Raymond Nichols; daughters, Ina Morgan, Leana Faye (Norman) Hoback, Pearlie Ann Sowers, Betty Jane Martin and Lillian Sue (Barry) Smith; brother, Carl (Claudine) Wimmer; sisters, Mabel Manning, Thelma Ramsey and Reba (Warren) Richards; 35 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren and 19 great great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Ernestine Nichols, Arnetta Nichols, Louise Nichols and Betty Lee Nichols, also Kim Smith and Karen Martin; numerous nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. A special thanks is extended to her loving and faithful caregivers, Jeanne Duncan and Christy. Ollie Mae was an inspiration to everyone that knew her, especially her family. she will be greatly missed by all. Funeral arrangements are being made by Wood Funeral Home in Floyd, Va. The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 30, 2005 at Oakey's South Roanoke from 2 to 9 p.m. and on Friday, July 1 at Copper Hill Church of the Brethren from 1 to 2 p.m. Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. at the Copper Hill Church of the Brethren, with with Rev. Maurice Wright and Rev. Dale bowman officiating with interment in the church cemetery. 3

  • COPPER HILL -- Mrs. Addie Nichols Wood, 86, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1988 in a Shawsville Nursing Home. She is survived by: two daughters and sons-in-law, Lois and Everett Lancaster, Boones Mill, Alice and Earl Farmer, Roanoke; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert L. and Mary Wood, Doug and Donnie Wood, all of Copper Hill; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Nichols, Salem. Funeral services were Wednesday, Jan. 20, at 11 a.m. at Copper Hill Church of the Brethren, with Rev. Douglas Jones and Rev. Frank Wimmer officiating. Interment in Restvale Cemetery. Arrangements by Wood Funeral Home. 5

    Angela Rogers Hancock #MemorialMonday

    Angela Eileen Hancock, 54, of Pickard Circle, died Friday, March 14, 2014, at Wake Forest Baptist Health — Lexington Medical Center after declining health of several years.

    A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Forest Hill Memorial Park by the Rev. Abraham Silva.

    Angela was born June 8, 1959, in Richland County, S.C., to Lavern Rogers and Mary Kelly Silva. She was previously employed with Frank Ix & Sons. She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Sue Lopez.

    Surviving are her mother of Lexington; father of Camden S.C.; husband Fred Hancock of the home; sons Freddie Hancock of Welcome and Abram Hancock of the home; daughter Felicia Hutchens of Mocksville; brothers Ronald Silva of Arizona and Russell Rogers of South Carolina; sisters Rhonda Bermudez of Matthews and Mary Farley of Lexington; and grandchildren Ashley, Samuel, Reina, Tristan, Lelann and Eva.

    Davidson Funeral Home is serving the family.
