My cousin Private James B. Bond was killed and scalped by indians during Black Hawk's War. James and his company were attacked at Kellogg's Grove by a band of Black Hawk's Indians. According to my sources, Black Hawk led the attack personally.
The next day, sources say that an army unit that included Private Abraham Lincoln, found the bodies and buried them. A monument was later erected at the site in memory of the battle.
On the morning of June 26 an odd company under CAPTAIN JACOB EARLY, a Springfield circuit rider and physician, reached Kellogg's Grove. The impressions of PRIVATE ABRAHAM LINCOLN, who had enlisted in this company after ELIJAH ISLE'S twenty-day company had been disbanded, are worth recording: " I remember just how those men looked as we rode up the little hill where their camp was. The red light of the morning sun was streaming upon them as they lay heads toward us on the ground. And every man had a round red spot on the top of his head about as big as a dollar, where the redskins had taken his scalp. It was frightful, but it was grotesque; and the red sunlight seemed to paint everything all over. {pause} I remember that one man had buckskin breeches on."
James Bond was survived by his wife, Mary Ann Holt of the Jamestown Holts and at least two children; Elizabeth and Allen Wright Bond, who was named after his great grandfather Wright Bond, a Sergeant in the American Revolution.
